HOW YOU CAN HELP

Budgets are a government’s most important policy statement. Yet despite polls that consistently show high public support for more environmental protection, federal (and provincial) budget cuts to environmental programs have resulted in less.

In a recent OECD report, based on 25 environmental indicators, Canada ranked 28th out of 29 nations. In criticizing the country’s performance, the report cited:

  • ineffective voluntary pollution reduction programs;
  • failure to develop a solid plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • generous subsidies to resource companies; and
  • budget cuts that have prevented enforcement of existing environmental laws and regulations.

The Green Budget Coalition is urging the federal government to protect Canada’s environment by addressing three key elements in the upcoming budget:

  • clear air and climate change;
  • protection and conservation of our natural heritage; and
  • healthy communities.

You can help.
Ask the Prime Minister and Finance Minister James M. Flaherty to listen to Canadians and their concerns about our future. Tell them it's time to invest in the environment.
